The Island of Menorca

Hotel rural Menorca

On the island of Menorca, distances are short enough to open a wealth of possibilities. You can be enjoying the beauty of the Menorcan countryside inland while being just a few kilometres from the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean’s best-preserved beaches.

Menorca has an area of 702 square kilometres and 216 kilometres of coastline. The greatest distance between two points is 47 kilometres, between Ciutadella and Maó. The coast of Es Castell, on the easternmost tip of the island, is the first place in Spain to be touched by the rising sun.

Geologically, the island can be divided into two symmetric but very different halves: the north, with a rugged, broken, relatively bare coastline, studded with islets just off the shore and dark red sandy beaches; and the south, with its gentle limestone cliffs, gullies sculpted by the force of water and white-sand coves ringed by Mediterranean pines. The highest point on the island is Mount Toro, at a height of 357 metres above sea-level.

In 1993, Menorca was declared a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO. A distinction that acknowledges the harmony in which the inhabitants of Menorca have lived with their natural environment over the course of history.

Menorca is an island whose greatness is not to be owed to its size but to its exceptional diversity of Mediterranean landscapes, with endemic flora and fauna that are only found on this island. The rural landscape has been modelled to a human scale, preserving all the purity of a natural environment to which the Menorcans have harmoniously adapted. It is thanks to this commitment that the people of Menorca have not only preserved their environment but have enhanced its beauty with traditional constructions that blend perfectly with their surroundings.  A natural paradise where we can immerse ourselves in the beauty offered by the Natural Park of Albufera d´es Grau (a haven for migratory birds, fish and reptiles), five natural reserves, one sea reserve and 19 ANEI zones (Natural Areas of Special Interest), with Ca Na Xini located in one of them.
