Ferreries

Hotel rural Menorca

The borough of Ferreries is located in the centre of Menorca. It is aligned from north to south, with an area of 67.39 square kilometres, an average altitude of 140 metres above sea-level, although its highest point is Puig de Santa Àgueda (260 metres high), and extensive unspoilt areas (comprising two-thirds of its territory)  of pine and holm oak woods and Mediterranean scrubland.

According to oral tradition, the town, founded at the end of the 13th century, owes its names to the blacksmiths who settled here to serve the itinerant traders and their horses who travelled around the island.
The borough has been the last part of Menorca to open up to the tourist industry. Even so, tourism is becoming an increasingly important part of the economy of Ferreries, which also has companies that produce footwear, furniture and costume jewellery.

Its cultural wealth is to be found, among other places, in the Castle of Santa Àgueda (dating from Moorish times and declared a Heritage of General Interest by the Town Council of Ferreries), Naveta de Cova des Moro (the neolithic settlement of Son Mercer de Baix), the Church of Saint Bartholomew (18th century), the itineraries of the Camí Reial (one of the oldest communication routes on the island, dating back to the Middle Ages: es Coll Llis, es Pouets, sa Cova Reial and Costa de na Salema), and the ravines of Trebalúger and d’Algendar. The borough has a total of 3 BEACHES, with an equal number in the neighbouring town of Es Mercadal.
